Wedding Invitations &
Announcements
As soon as a date is set and guest lists are complete, you should select and
order your invitations. Allow at least three months to give yourself ample time
for addressing, mailing and responses. When placing your order, ask to possibly
get the inner and outer envelopes early, so you can have them addressed and
ready to mail. If you are having invitations addressed by your calligrapher, you
will need to plan extra time.
Remember, envelopes should be hand written in ink, never typed. Do not
abbreviate names and addresses. Have your return envelopes printed with your
order and be sure the return envelope is pre stamped before mailing.
The order of enclosure for invitations is as follows. The un gummed inner
envelope is left unsealed and addressed (to Mr. & Mrs. Jones) with no first
names or addresses. Children under 13 can be included by writing their first
name under the parents. Older children should receive their own invitations.
The invitation itself is covered with tissue paper to protect the printing
form smudges. It is then placed into the inner envelope along with the response
card and return envelope and a map or directions if necessary. the complete
inner envelope is then placed in the outer envelope so that the name faces the
flap.
Traditionally, when the bride's family hosted the wedding, the invitation was
in their name. Today though, depending upon circumstances there are many
variations. Check with your stationery specialist for sample wording to fit your
situation.
Order wedding announcements for those people who will not be at the ceremony
or reception. Send them the day of the wedding if possible. The announcements
may be from the bride's or groom's family or the wedding couple themselves.
The bride when sending notes or thank you cards should never use her name
or both names until after the wedding.
Order invitations at least three months in advance to allow for errors.
Invitations are printed by two methods: engraving (cutting letters into the
paper), or thermography (heat process resembling engraving but less
expensive). This method is used to reproduce calligraphy or hand lettered
characters.
Have your maps, directions, or other enclosures printed in a style similar
to your invitations.
Order extra envelopes and invitations to allow for errors and to keep for
souvenirs.
